Two-factory sourcing is the default: one supplier for the kitchen line, one for the bathroom line, each chosen on the price of a single model. The problem is not unit price. Two suppliers mean two tooling sets, two plating setups, two cartridge platforms and two quality systems to audit — none of which appears on a price list.
Here is the arithmetic, using a zinc alloy Electroplating Faucet program as the worked example, because that is where the cost structure is most transparent.
In the finish and the tooling — not in the shipping.
Take a single-lever zinc alloy mixer, FOB Wenzhou USD 10.00. The cost build looks roughly like this:
| Cost element | Share of FOB | What drives it |
| Zinc alloy die casting (Zamak 5, 450–600 g) | 18–22% | Part weight, wall thickness, mold cavitation |
| Copper strike + nickel + chrome electroplating | 15–20% | Layer thickness and finish colour changes |
| Ceramic cartridge (35 mm or 40 mm) | 10–14% | Cycle rating, brand of cartridge |
| Aerator, hoses, fixings, mounting kit | 8–12% | Where cheap programs quietly cut |
| Polishing, assembly, 100% pressure test | 10–12% | Labour content and reject rate |
| Packaging and carton | 4–6% | Carton size and print |
| Factory margin and export documentation | 12–18% | Volume, payment terms, season |
Two entries dominate: casting and plating together are close to 40% of the unit. On an Electroplating Faucet program, the plating line is also the only cost element you can change without retooling — which is what makes finish rationalisation the fastest lever available.
Run the same 23,000 units as one 40HQ floor-loaded container versus four LCL shipments:
| Line | One 40HQ | Four LCL shipments |
| Product FOB | $234,200 | $234,200 |
| Ocean freight | $2,200 | $7,040 |
| Origin docs and THC | $350 | $1,000 |
| Destination CFS, clearance, inland | $4,200 | $4,120 |
| Marine insurance | $700 | $700 |
| Duty at 6.5% on CIF | $15,411 | $15,726 |
| Total landed | $257,061 | $262,786 |
| Per unit | $11.18 | $11.43 |
Assumes 6.5% ad valorem duty, 65 CBM usable in a 40HQ, LCL at USD 110/CBM plus CFS handling. Q4 2026 planning rates, subject to the spot market.
The difference is 2.2% — real, but not the 10% buyers assume, and available to anyone shipping four SKUs from one factory. It is not a reason to consolidate suppliers.
Where the 4–7% actually comes from:
BURLIN builds its kitchen and basin lines on exactly this logic — one die-casting and plating platform in Longwan, Wenzhou, shared cartridge families, and finishes held to a single test protocol rather than two.
✅ Bottom line: Casting and plating are ~40% of unit cost, so shared tooling and finish rationalisation beat freight negotiation every time.

Because a plating line is a batch process, and the batch is the barrel — not the carton.
A plating barrel holds roughly 200–400 faucet bodies. Changing finish means emptying the line, topping up the bath, running a first article and scrapping the ramp-up parts. That cost is fixed whether you plate 300 pieces or 3,000, so MOQ is set per finish, not per model. This is the mechanic no quotation explains, and why a 10-SKU enquiry comes back as ten separate minimums.
Cut the number of finishes. Two finishes — polished chrome plus one matte or gun grey — across ten models gives five models per finish. At a 1,000-piece minimum per finish, that is 200 pieces per SKU instead of 1,000. Finish count is the MOQ multiplier, so negotiate it first.
Let the carton set the container. In a 40HQ with about 65 CBM usable:
Same container, 27% more units at the top end — traded against carton weight for manual handling and crush risk in a floor-loaded stack. For a Bathroom Faucet with a tall spout, geometry dictates the carton, so work the mix around it.
Anchor the mix on the shared model. Load the highest-volume items first and treat low-volume Kitchen Faucet SKUs as the flexible balance. Suppliers bend on the tail when the head of the order is predictable.
Wenzhou Burlin Sanitary Ware Technology Co., Ltd. quotes this way as standard — MOQ per finish, carton cube per SKU, OEM/ODM tooling terms written into the quotation rather than discovered at the sample stage. As a China manufacturer selling direct to importers and project contractors, BURLIN handles bulk and private-label programs without a trading layer in between.
✅ Bottom line: MOQ is a plating-batch number, so reduce finishes first — two finishes can cut your per-SKU minimum by up to 80%.

Q: What is a realistic MOQ for a custom faucet? A: For an existing die and finish, 300–500 pieces per SKU is achievable on an 8–10 SKU order. A new die adds USD 12,000–18,000 and pushes the practical minimum to 3,000+ pieces. Anything quoted below 300 pieces per SKU on a custom finish usually means the changeover is being absorbed elsewhere in the price.
Q: Is zinc alloy acceptable for a wet-area fitting, or should I specify brass? A: For external parts — handles, escutcheons, spout shells — properly plated zinc alloy performs well and is inherently lead-free, which simplifies NSF/ANSI 61 and RoHS compliance. Keep brass where the part sits under continuous pressure or high temperature, such as a valve body. Most programs run a mixed bill of materials.
Q: Can one factory hold the same finish quality across a kitchen faucet and bathroom faucet program? A: Yes, if both run on the same plating line with the same recipe and the test is done on the assembled part. The risk appears when a supplier outsources plating to a second workshop to hit a deadline: layer thickness drifts, and colour mismatch becomes visible the moment the two fixtures sit in the same showroom. Ask whether plating is in-house, and request a layer report per batch.
Send BURLIN your SKU list — models, finishes, quantities and destination port — and you get a quotation built the way the arithmetic above works: MOQ per finish, carton cube per SKU, a 40HQ loading plan and tooling terms in writing. If you currently run two suppliers, we will show the changeover and tooling difference side by side.
